History :
The All India Women’s Conference Borivli Branch was established on 26th July,1996 under the guidance of some senior members namely Late Smt. Usha Jairam, Late Smt. Avantika Dalal, Smt. Hansa Shroff, Smt. Nivedita Sheth, Smt. Pramila Kulkarni, Smt. Kasturtai Manjrekar and Dr. Hansa Pradip.
Education :
During the tenure of Late Smt. Jayashree Somani, as Branch President, we adopted a school run by the Zilla Parishad at Raigaonin Bhayandar where children of salt – pan workers and fisherfolks are educated. The school has now been shifted to Mira Road and there are 4 classes having 100 students studying in standard I to IV. We donate note books, pencils, erasers and slates. We also donate fruits and snacks occasionally. A drawing competition is held on 14th Nov., every year to celebrate Children’s Day.
We also work for the welfare of the leprosy people at the Leper’s Colony, Pushpa Vihar, Dahisar. The Rehabilitation centre run by the City Mission of India Society shelters the orphans of lepers, children of unwed mothers and 40 families of lepers. We educate and train the children in short term professional courses. Many of these children have become drivers, electricians and some have also graduated and have settled in Gulf countries.
Cultural Activities :
The Branch organizes exhibition-cum-sale of products made/promoted by our members. Competitions in various events, indoor and outdoor games, anatakshari, cooking, etc. are held regularly. Medical camps and lectures on Natural Therapy have been conducted with very good response from our members and general public. We regularly conduct Cataract operation at S.P.Jain Eye Hospital, Dahisar. The operations are performed at a concessional rate/free of cost through our recommendation. So far 35 adivasis have beenoperated. On an average 10/15 patients are sent by us every year.
Domestic Problems :
We have started a grievence cell where many domestic problems are solved by our advocate Smt. Pushpa Gupte, Dr. Lalita Bhat and our local advocate Shri. Avinsh Koregaonkar. Many of the cases are solved by mutual counseling within the families. We also protect senior citizens by giving them the right to live dignified.
Special Activities :
Our Branch plays a major role in helping the victims of Human Trafficking. The girls in their teens are the victims in the flesh trade. They are saved from brothels and pimps. The girls are protected in the Rescue Foundation Home of Government of Maharashtra. Our members take an active part in teaching them basic cooking and languages. Certificate Courses are imparted by Jana Shikshan Sangh through our Branch. Some of the girls are settled in life through wedlock. We have so far married off 25 girls. Our Branch members donate clothes, luggage/handbags, utencils, footwears and imitation jewellery during their marriage ceremony. In appreciation of our work in this field, our Parent Body has awarded us Merit Certificates four times. We were also awarded a Rotating Trophy at our Annual Conference held on 14th Nov.2008. We are proud of our members who willingly support in this noble work.
